[Overview]
This is an ALTEC 608 bass-reflex speaker system, produced by ALTEC from approximately the 1950s through the 1960s.
This model includes the original factory stands, allowing the speakers to be positioned either vertically or horizontally according to preference.
It is an extremely rare model that was produced in very limited numbers.
This system, designed for the “604” Duplex series, is considered one of ALTEC’s three major speaker systems, alongside the company’s legendary “Voice of the Theater” and “Iconic” systems.
The “612” system, which was widely used as a standard monitor speaker in numerous recording studios, is particularly well known.
In addition to this model and the “612,” ALTEC introduced a succession of models such as the “605,” “613,” and “614,” creating a major sensation in the audio industry at the time.
The drivers installed in this pair of 608 enclosures are ALTEC 605A two-way units, manufactured in the United States.
Finished in ALTEC’s unmistakable green, the 605A has an almost majestic appearance.
The 604 series is widely regarded as one of the finest speaker lines ever produced by ALTEC.
One of the main differences from the 604E is that the 605A was designed specifically for home use.
Rather than pursuing the powerful dynamics required for professional applications, the 605A focuses on a more delicate and smooth tonal character, resulting in an exceptionally pleasant and comfortable listening experience.
As with the 604E, its excellent compatibility with the 612-type enclosure is clearly evident.
The system uses the ALTEC N1600 crossover network. The seamless integration between the frequency ranges sets it apart from conventional crossover systems.
The 605A is also highly regarded for its excellent efficiency, allowing it to perform exceptionally well even when paired with a low-powered amplifier.
Despite their vintage age, the enclosures remain in very clean condition, as can be seen in the photographs.
