Tru-sonic P52FR Full Range Speakers w/ Cabinets

[Overview]

This is a pair of TRU-SONIC P52FR full-range speaker units, manufactured in the United States, housed in their original dedicated 15-inch cabinets.

TRU-SONIC was one of the companies competing at the forefront of the golden age of audio beginning around the 1950s. At the time, engineers from STEPHENS, a company affiliated with WESTERN ELECTRIC, brought together their technical expertise, obtained the rights to use W.E. technology and patents, and established TRU-SONIC.

The engineers from STEPHENS were also involved in numerous projects for other manufacturers, demonstrating their considerable technical ability. Notable examples include W.E. theater sound systems and ALTEC’s compact theater system, the famous “Iconic.”

With the goal of producing high-quality loudspeakers comparable to ALTEC studio monitors, TRU-SONIC introduced products such as the two-way AXA Series as well as the P52FR full-range speaker featured here.

As one would expect from a manufacturer capable of standing alongside ALTEC, one of the most highly regarded names in audio history, the sound quality is outstanding.

The midrange through high frequencies are exceptionally smooth and rich, with a distinctive tonal character that sets these speakers apart from other manufacturers in a very positive way. They deliver a powerful and engaging presentation.

In contrast to the relatively flat response of TRU-SONIC’s AXA Series, the P52FR has the punch and character unique to a full-range driver, along with a strong, substantial low-frequency response. This performance was well suited to the listening demands of its era.

The cone used in the P52FR is very similar to that of JBL’s 150-4C, and the bass character is also quite similar. Another distinctive feature is the unique horn, shaped somewhat like the petals of a rose, which contributes to the speaker’s smooth and lustrous high-frequency reproduction.

The P52FR is an exceptionally accomplished speaker unit. If there is one drawback, it would simply be its rarity, which makes finding a properly matched pair extremely difficult.

The enclosures feature a refined and simple studio-oriented design reminiscent of the ALTEC 612 “Silver Box.”

After several decades of aging, the cabinet wood has become thoroughly seasoned and dry, giving the impression that the sound continues to mature over time.

Despite their age, both the exterior and interior of the cabinets remain in excellent condition.
