This is a pair of TRU-SONIC 206AXA 2-way speaker units, made in the USA.
TRU-SONIC emerged during the golden age of audio that began around the 1950s. At the time, engineers from STEPHENS, which had been affiliated with WESTERN ELECTRIC, brought together their accumulated expertise, obtained rights to use W.E. technical patents, and established TRU-SONIC.
The engineers from STEPHENS also participated in numerous projects for other manufacturers, fully demonstrating their technical capabilities. Representative projects included W.E. theater systems and JBL’s compact theater system, the “Iconic.”
With the goal of creating a high-quality speaker comparable to the ALTEC 604, TRU-SONIC introduced the 206AXA as one of its flagship products.
As a speaker capable of standing alongside the highly regarded ALTEC 604E, considered one of the finest speakers in audio history, its sound quality is truly impressive.
The smoothness and richness of the sound from the midrange through the high frequencies have a character distinct from other manufacturers, while still providing a highly versatile and natural presentation.
Thanks to its smooth frequency response, rather than delivering the powerful and strongly colored character often associated with ALTEC speakers, the 206AXA produces a flatter, open, crisp, and highly transparent sound.
The cone used in the 206AXA is very similar to that of JBL’s 150-4C, giving it a similar bass character.
For those who have never experienced the 206AXA, imagining the sound of the 150-4C may provide a useful reference.
Another attractive feature is its multicellular coaxial horn, which produces smooth, rich, and beautifully refined high frequencies.
